Boston Dynamics investing $100M to consolidate in Waltham

Boston Dynamics is planning a major expansion in Waltham, adding more than 1,200 jobs and consolidating the company’s regional footprint into a new advanced robotics and artificial intelligence center.

The company announced it will invest $100 million to transform a 323,000-square-foot facility at 1601 Trapelo Road in Reservoir Place into a hub for manufacturing, research, workforce training and AI development. The site sits just across Route 128 from Boston Dynamics’ current headquarters on Smith Road.

The company expects to create 1,250 new jobs by 2033 and bring together operations currently spread across three nearby locations, deepening the company’s presence in Waltham, where it has long been based.

City officials recently approved local tax incentives to support Boston Dynamics’ continued growth, part of a broader effort to retain and expand major employers in Waltham’s Route 128 corridor. The expansion also received a $25 million state Economic Development Incentive Program award to support construction, manufacturing and workforce training tied to the company’s robotics platforms.

“This investment gives our team the space and resources we need to launch our third robot platform this decade,” Amanda McMaster, interim CEO of Boston Dynamics, said in a statement. “We will continue recruiting and hiring excellent talent to lead this emerging industry and meaningfully contribute to the greater Boston business community.”

State leaders said the project reinforces Massachusetts’ leading position in the global robotics and advanced manufacturing sectors.

Governor Maura Healey called the expansion a step toward creating good jobs and strengthening the state’s innovation economy, while Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll said it would “support local economic growth and further establish Massachusetts as a destination for advanced manufacturing.”

For Waltham, the development represents both an economic opportunity and a continuation of the city’s evolution as a center for technology and life sciences along Route 128. The influx of jobs and investment is expected to increase demand for housing, local services and workforce development partnerships.

The facility, owned by BXP, will undergo extensive renovation, with Boston Dynamics planning a phased move-in beginning in mid-2027.
