St. Mary Parish is inviting the community to showcase their creativity in its annual Nativity Scene Contest, with entries due by Nov. 28.

Parish organizers will display both new and past entries the weekend after Thanksgiving.

This year, nine cash prizes totaling $1,200 will be awarded. First-, second- and third-place winners will be named in each of three categories: creative use of materials, craftsmanship, and fidelity to the biblical account of Jesus’ birth.

In a special twist, the winning nativity scenes will be delivered to local businesses and displayed in storefronts in December.

“We have seen such great talent and creativity in all the nativity scenes on display over Thanksgiving weekend,” said the Rev. Michael Nolan, pastor of St. Mary Parish. “And it’s even more wonderful to see all the nativity scenes throughout the Waltham community for the month of December. It is starting to catch on.”

Father Nolan said that the event answers the late Pope Francis’ call for a revival of displaying crèches and nativity scenes, as expressed in his apostolic letter “The Enchanted Image.”

“It is a beautiful and simple way to announce the birth of our Lord in a way that draws people into the mystery,” Nolan said. “Please spread the word. We are looking forward to seeing all the entries.”

All contest details are available at the St. Mary Parish website. There is no entry form, but participants should securely tape their name and phone number to their sculpture. Entries can be dropped off at St. Mary’s rectory, 133 School St. Participants are asked to call ahead at 781-891-1730 to ensure someone is available to receive their entry.

Community members are invited to visit local storefronts in December to see the nativity scenes on display throughout Waltham.
