The French and Greenlandic film “The Incredible Snow Woman” has its North American premiere Monday, April 27, at 7 p.m. at the West Newton Cinema, 1296 Washington St. in Newton. It is part of the Belmont World Film’s 24th International Film Series. The screening will be followed by a discussion led by WBUR film critic Erin Trahan.

The film stars popular French comedian, actress and screenwriter Blanche Gardin as an Arctic explorer traveling solo across Greenland, camping on an ice floe, and even single-handedly wrestling a bear. After losing her job and being dumped by her boyfriend, she shows up unannounced at her childhood home in France’s Jura Mountains. There she wreaks havoc on the townspeople, perhaps a reference to her being “bi-polar.” Ill and daunted by her own mortality, she returns to Greenland where she is cared for by two Inuits who discover her lying in the snow. The film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival’s Panorama section.

Tickets for “The Incredible Snow Woman” and other films in the series are available in advance online, with remaining seats sold at the door at the West Newton Cinema.

Individual tickets are $14 in advance with no fees and $16 at the door. “Passports,” which can be shared with one other person, provide admission to eight films for $96, and memberships that include tickets or passports plus benefits such as free ticket exchanges are also available. Tickets and passes are half-price for EBT, WIC and ConnectorCare cardholders. For tickets or more information, visit belmontworldfilm.org or call 617-484-3980.
