Rain and remembrance: Waltham honors fallen service members

Waltham community members gathered Monday morning on the common for the city’s annual Memorial Day observance honoring fallen United States service members.

Under steady rainfall, dozens attended the ceremony, including Waltham Mayor Jeannette A. McCarthy, City Councilors, other elected officials, veterans and members of the police and fire departments. The assembled crowd stood together somberly under umbrellas.

The annual observance was organized by the Waltham Veterans’ Services Department. Waltham’s American Legion Band played patriotic music.

The Waltham Police and Fire Honor Guards stood resolutely in uniforms darkened by rain. McCarthy placed a red, white and blue wreath in memory of generations of Waltham residents who gave their lives in service to the country. As the rain beat down, the community united in reflection and remembrance.
