Senior Center this week: Games galore and health checks

Waltham’s Council on Aging operates out of the William F. Stanley Senior Center at 488 Main St. The spacious, well-equipped center offers abundant programs for exercise, music, classes and socializing. Check out the center’s newsletter for a full listing. Call 781-314-3499 with questions and to register for programs.

Daily programs include billiards and bocce games (drop-in).

Every Tuesday 9:30—11:30 a.m. Bridge lessons. $10 per lesson. Bridge game at 1 p.m. All are welcome.

Every Tuesday at 10 a.m. English as a second language classes given by an experienced ESL teacher. Improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills while learning practical English for everyday life. Free but please register.

Every Wednesday at 10:30–11:30 a.m. Hora del Café. Spanish-speaking coffee hour. 

Thursday, July 9. Foot care with Dr. Helen Cho, DPM, a board-certified podiatric physician, surgeon and wound-care specialist. Dr. Cho will perform routine nail and callous care only at the COA. Cost is $35.00 in cash. Please call the front desk to schedule your appointment.

Friday, July 10, 10 a.m. with subtitles; 1 p.m. no subtitles. Film screening of “Far and Away,” a 1992 Western romantic adventure drama film directed by Ron Howard, starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. Set in the 1890s, the story follows Joseph Donnelly, a poor Irish tenant farmer, and Shannon Christie, his wealthy landlord’s rebellious daughter. They form an unlikely alliance and flee Ireland together for America in pursuit of freedom and a shared dream of owning land. Rated R, run time is 2 hours 20 minutes. Donation of $0.50. Please register.

Priscilla Elliott is a volunteer with The Waltham Times and liaison to the Council on Aging. A respiratory therapist, Priscilla worked nights at the Waltham Hospital.  Later, she helped smokers learn how to become smoke-free, leading to healthier lives. Priscilla’s volunteer experiences include reading to blind people through the Massachusetts Association for the Blind, fostering cats for The Cat Connection and being a healthy control in Parkinson’s Disease clinical trials with The Michael J. Fox Foundation. She counts baseball, classical music and following politics among her hobbies.
