Senior Center this week: Sages and Seekers starts, energy and money advice, “Oliver!”

Waltham’s Council on Aging operates out of the William F. Stanley Senior Center at 488 Main St. The spacious, well-equipped center offers guidance on senior issues as well as rich programs for exercise, music, classes and socializing. Zoom nonfiction book discussion, Tuesday, Sept. 15, 11 a.m. “Blood and Thunder,” by Hampton Sides (2006), tells the dramatic story of the American West through the life of frontiersman Kit Carson. The
book explores America’s expansion into the Southwest and its impact on Native peoples, especially during pivotal events such as the Navajo Long Walk. Hampton Sides blends history and storytelling to give readers a vivid look at this turbulent era. Free. Please register.
Sages and Seekers Creating Connections, Tuesday Sept. 15, 3 to 4 p.m. Through partnerships with Waltham Connections and Waltham High School, the COA invites seniors to join this seven-week program connecting adults 60+ with WHS students. Sessions meet at the Senior Center on Tuesday afternoons weekly through Oct. 27 and focus on meaningful group and one-on-one conversations that build intergenerational understanding. If you can attend all seven weeks, please leave your contact information with the Council on Aging at 781-314-3499, and a team member will follow up.
Let’s Talk Energy, Wednesday, Sept. 16, 10:30 a.m. Join us for a presentation with Eversource to better understand your energy bills, available assistance programs, and easy ways to save energy at home. Residents will also learn about energy efficiency programs, including Mass Save, which offers home assessments and rebates to improve comfort and reduce costs. You will be introduced to Eversource’s upcoming 2026 smart meter rollout, which will provide near real‑time energy use information. Free. Please register.
Money Smart, Wednesday, Sept. 16, 11 a.m. Learn important points to consider in planning for a more secure financial future, including how to guard against identity theft and other forms of financial exploitation, as well as how to prepare financially for unexpected life events, and disasters. Free. Please register.
Movie: “Oliver!”, Friday, Sept. 18, 10 a.m. with subtitles; 1 p.m. no subtitles. “Oliver!” is a beloved 1968 musical based on Charles Dickens’ classic novel Oliver Twist. Filled with memorable songs, lively dance numbers, and charming performances, the movie follows young Oliver as he navigates life in 19th‑century London — from the workhouse to the bustling streets, encountering colorful characters such as the Artful Dodger and the kind‑hearted Mr. Brownlow. G/ 2 hours 33 minutes. $0.50 donation. Please register.

The COA provides information on legal services, home care, assistance with nursing homes and assisted living facilities, financial assistance, housing options, mental health and substance abuse.
- Volunteers are needed to deliver Meals on Wheels. Home-delivered meals are available Monday- Friday. Subsidized by Springwell or private pay.
- Senior parking permits are available for $5 per year. Show your driver’s license at the COA registration desk.
- Taxi vouchers are available for purchase, six books per month.
- Help with transportation. Medical appointment transportation is available in Waltham only. Grocery shopping routes are on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, call for availability. Limited transportation to the Senior Center is available upon request with advance notice.

The Boston Saxophone Quartet. Friday, Oct. 9, 1:30 p.m. The Boston Saxophone Quartet will bring their signature blend of rich harmonies, smooth jazz and timeless classics. The quartet features four talented saxophonists who play everything from lively swing tunes to tunes to beautiful melodic pieces.

English as a second language classes. Tuesdays at 10 a.m. Classes given by an experienced ESL teacher. Improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills while learning practical English for everyday life. Free but please register.
