Councilor-at-Large Vidal receives state Latino Excellence Award

The Massachusetts Black and Latino Legislative Caucus awarded Waltham Councilor-at-Large Carlos A. Vidal a Latino Excellence on the Hill award on Sept. 25.

Vidal, Waltham’s first Latino councilor, received his award at a ceremony held at the Statehouse in recognition of his contributions and lasting impact on the community.

Vidal expressed his gratitude and humility, reflecting on what the nomination means for Waltham.

“Me being the only elected official there that is Latino and an immigrant as well, it is very meaningful for the community,” he said.

Recipients of the award must be nominated by a state representative.

A first-time nominee, Vidal was nominated by state Rep. John Lawn, D-Mass., 10th Middlesex, in collaboration with Rep. Thomas M. Stanley, D-Mass., 9th Middlesex.

Vidal is a strong leader and voice for Waltham’s Latino community, according to Lawn, who has worked alongside Vidal since 2015.

“He is a trailblazer whose leadership and dedication uplifts Latino voices, strengthens public safety, improves infrastructure and advances equity,” Lawn said.

Stanley also presented Vidal with a citation in recognition of his work.

“His tireless work in our community ensures that the needs of every resident are being met, and I look forward to continuing our partnership in building a stronger, more inclusive Waltham,” Stanley said.

With ongoing fear and uncertainty in the city, Lawn said, having Vidal as a Councilor-at-Large is crucial.

“The targeting of ICE sent shockwaves through the community,” said Lawn. “I know there is fear there, but having a voice like Carlos on the city council for the Latino community is very important, and that’s why I think his honor today is very important.

Going forward during challenging times, Vidal said, it’s important for all members of the Waltham community to look out for one another.

“It’s powerful for us to remain together, to remain connected, to be good citizens and good neighbors,” he said. “That expands beyond the Latino community.”
