Matthew Brennan, 1972–2025, “inspired countless students with his love for teaching”

Matthew E. Brennan, of Malden, formerly of Waltham, died at home on Monday, Oct. 20 2025. He was 52.

Matthew was born in Waltham on Nov. 12, 1972, a beloved son of Donald M. and Mary Ellen (Scott) Brennan of Waltham. Raised in Waltham, he graduated from Waltham High School before earning his bachelor’s degree at Emerson College and his master’s degrees from Cambridge College.

A passionate educator, Matthew found his calling as a science teacher at Higgins Middle School in Peabody, where he inspired countless students with his love for teaching. Earlier in life, he explored his creative side through acting, including a memorable stint at the American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) in Cambridge.

Matthew had lived in Malden for about 20 years and was a former member of the Masonic Lodge in Lexington.

Matthew cherished his time on the water, sailing his boat in the lakes region of New York and along the shores of Rhode Island, and was an avid golfer. A devoted New England Patriots fan, he was a former season ticket holder, rarely missing a chance to cheer for his team.

In addition to his parents, he leaves his brother, Donald M. Brennan, Jr., and his wife, Estelle, of Natick; his nephew, Donald M. Brennan, III; and several cousins and their families.

Family and friends will honor and remember Matthew’s life by gathering for an evening wake in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Friday, Oct. 24 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning in Mount Feake Cemetery, 203 Prospect Street, Waltham.
