Public safety report: Truck strikes overhang at Shell station, driver cited for unlicensed operation 

A collision between a box truck and a gas pump garnered police attention this week.

On July 17 at 6:28 p.m., police responded to reports of a motor vehicle accident at the Shell gas station at 65 Main St. Upon arrival, police discovered a box truck that had struck the overhang above the gas pumps. 

The driver stated that he had misjudged the height of the truck and the height of the overhang, which caused the collision. While the driver was not cited for the collision, he was cited for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

A summary of additional police and fire activity from July 16 through July 18 is as follows:

On July 16 at 7:08 p.m., police responded to reports of a suspicious incident at BJ’s Wholesale Club on Seyon Street. The caller told police that someone had opened up a credit card in his name and made purchases at BJ’s using his personal information. Police filed a police report and provided the man with information from the Federal Trade Commission regarding identity theft.

On July 16 at 10:10 p.m., fire crews responded to an apartment on Middlesex Road. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a small pile of smoldering mulch outside. Crews wet down the area. There was no fire damage and the fire was contained to the area of mulch.

On July 17 at 3:28 p.m., police responded to reports of a larceny at Costco Wholesale on Second Avenue. A woman said that another customer at the store had taken her purse while she was distracted. Police are investigating.

On July 18 at 2:15 p.m., police responded to reports of a stolen vehicle located at the intersection of Smith Street and Trapelo Road. Police were able to locate the vehicle, and found it wasn’t actually stolen. Due to a clerical error by another police department, the vehicle wasn’t marked as found after it had been recovered.

On July 18 at 6:20 p.m., police responded to reports of a suspicious incident at an apartment building on Walnut Street. According to a resident, there was a mysterious foul smell emanating from a hallway. Officers were able to locate vomit in the hallway that was confirmed to be the source of the smell.

On July 18 at 9:39 p.m., police responded to Gordon’s Liquors on Main Street. An underaged person had attempted to use a fake ID and was caught by staff. The person began arguing with staff, asking for the ID back because he had paid a lot of money for it. After police were called, he left the store and was not present when police arrived.
