Senior Center this week: Register to hear the Singing Trooper honor 9/11

Waltham’s Council on Aging operates out of the William F. Stanley Senior Center at 488 Main St. The spacious, well-equipped center offers guidance on senior issues as well as rich programs for exercise, music, classes and socializing. Check out the center’s newsletter (en Español) for a full listing. Call 781-314-3499 with questions and to register for programs.

Schedule appointments for 2027 Medicare open enrollment, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8. The annual Medicare open enrollment period runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. During this time, Medicare beneficiaries can select different coverages for the following year.

Sign-ups for bowling and beginner pickleball open on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 8:30 a.m. Please register in person only. Bowling lessons are on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Beginning pickleball classes are Fridays 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

The Singing Trooper, Friday, Sept. 11, 1:00 p.m. Daniel Clark will present his heartfelt concert in honor of 9/11. Known for his powerful voice and inspiring performances, Clark brings music that reflects remembrance, unity and pride. Please register. The cost is $5.00 per person due at sign up.

Planning ahead

Sages and Seekers Creating Connections. Tuesdays 3 to 4:30 p.m., Sept. 15 to Oct. 27. Sages and Seekers is a seven-week program offering a unique opportunity for seniors to connect and share meaningful conversations with students from Waltham High School. For adults 60 and older who are available for the seven-week program. If you are interested, please leave your contact information at the Council on Aging at 781-314-3499. A member of the planning committee will contact you.

Flu/COVID shot drop-in clinic, Thursdays, Sept. 24 and Oct. 8, at 1 p.m.  Waiver forms are available at the front desk to complete and bring with you. 

Did you know?

The COA provides information on legal services, home care, assistance with nursing homes and assisted living facilities, financial assistance, housing options, mental health and substance abuse.

  • Volunteers are needed to deliver Meals on Wheels. Home-delivered meals are available Monday- Friday. Subsidized by Springwell or private pay.
  • Senior parking permits are available for $5 per year. Show your driver’s license at the COA registration desk.
  • Taxi vouchers are available for purchase, six books per month.
  • Help with transportation. Medical appointment transportation is available in Waltham only. Grocery shopping routes are on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, call for availability. Limited transportation to the Senior Center is available upon request with advance notice.

Multi-language programs

English as a second language classes. Tuesdays at 10 a.m. Classes given by an experienced ESL teacher. Improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills while learning practical English for everyday life. Free but please register.

Hora del Café. Wednesdays at 10:30–11:30 a.m.  Spanish-speaking coffee hour. 

Ugandan Golden Seniors. Fridays 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Lunch program.

Priscilla Elliott is a volunteer with The Waltham Times and liaison to the Council on Aging. A respiratory therapist, Priscilla worked nights at the Waltham Hospital.  Later, she helped smokers learn how to become smoke-free, leading to healthier lives. Priscilla’s volunteer experiences include reading to blind people through the Massachusetts Association for the Blind, fostering cats for The Cat Connection and being a healthy control in Parkinson’s Disease clinical trials with The Michael J. Fox Foundation. She counts baseball, classical music and following politics among her hobbies.
