The week ahead: Affordable housing takes center stage at Tuesday’s meetings

After Labor Day, boards across the city are kicking into gear for the fall.

On Tuesday, both the Waltham Housing Authority — an organization that manages state and federal affordable housing properties and programs located in Waltham — and the Municipal Affordable Housing Trust Fund will discuss affordable housing plans around the city.

The WHA will discuss setting a fair market rent rate that will come into effect at its properties in November. The Municipal Affordable Housing Trust Fund’s trustees will hear updates on ongoing city housing projects, as well as a new presentation from Dyer’s Crescent Suites LLC., the corporation that owns the Crescent Suites Hotel at 287 Crescent St.

Below is a chronological rundown of other city meetings scheduled this week, Sept. 7 through 11.

Housing Authority

Aside from discussing rent prices for the upcoming year, the WHA will hold board elections, discuss the organization’s finances and give an update about two accessible state-owned properties on Marguerite Avenue whose WHA leases have been sitting in organizational limbo. 

Its meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at 4:30 p.m, held in person at 110 Pond St. and over Zoom with the password “414300.”

Municipal Affordable Housing Trust

The Municipal Affordable Housing Trust Fund is a fund that pays for and subsidizes municipal housing projects.

This week, members of the board will hear updates on city housing projects including Cardinal Cottage, the Hardy residences, the former Elks Lodge and 48-50 Mt. Walley Road, recently renamed Mac’s Place and Arrigo’s Place. 

It will meet 5 p.m. on Tuesday in the basement conference room of City Hall.

Recreation Board

The Recreation Board is an eight-person board that oversees the city’s public recreational spaces and programming. 

This week, it plans to discuss possible candidates for a recreation supervisor position, its staff policy manual, and fall sporting events including the Needham Soccer Day Memorial Tournament, a November tournament from the New England Intercontinental Football Academy and an inclusive athletic event run by the Waltham Police Department.

The board will meet on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Waltham Recreation Department at 510 Moody St.

Library Board of Trustees

The Board of Library Trustees is a five-person board appointed by the mayor and charged with establishing policies for the Waltham Public Library. 

The board will hold its monthly meeting at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Trustees Room of the Waltham Public Library.

Ward 4/5 Neighborhood Meeting

Mayor Jeanette A. McCarthy and Traffic Engineer Mike Garvin are inviting residents to a neighborhood meeting to discuss the future of the intersections where Main Street, Gore Street, Barbara Road and Warren Street meet, which sit on the border between wards 4 and 5.

The Traffic Commission previously approved plans to redesign the intersections in October 2025, and McCarthy has since marked the project as a priority for the Traffic Department.

Although this is a neighborhood meeting, the city website states all are welcome to attend. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in the auditorium of the Clark Government Center.

Conservation Commission

The Conservation Commission is a volunteer board charged with overseeing environmental planning in Waltham. The commission reviews certain types of construction on or around wetlands to ensure they comply with the Wetlands Protection Act and the Department of Environmental Protection stormwater standards.

This week, the commission will discuss a handful of construction projects, including repaving a parking lot at 231 Second Ave., redesigning the entrance of an office building at 404 Wyman St., a private home renovation on Kingston Road, and plans to reconstruct the driveways of a gas station at 962 Main St. that has been ping-ponging around city committees since January 2025. It will also hear McCarthy’s response to its questions about an overdue conservation restriction on Fernald property land.

It will hold its meeting over Zoom at 7 p.m. Thursday, with the password “Waltham.”

9/11 Remembrance Services

The Veterans’ Services department plans to hold its annual 9/11 Remembrance Day dedication at the Circle of Remembrance on the Waltham Common at 10 a.m. on Friday.
