Athletes with disabilities shine at Waltham’s A Special Day event

Athletes, families, volunteers and first responders gathered Saturday at Veterans Memorial Field for A Special Day in Waltham, a free community event celebrating inclusion and individuals with developmental disabilities.

The event featured a range of activities, including football, basketball, soccer and track and field, along with games, music and interactive stations. Participants ages 5 and older were invited to take part. They did not have to be Waltham residents to participate.

Organizers said the event aims to create a welcoming environment where participants can engage in recreational activities while building connections across the community.

A Special Day in Waltham is coordinated through a partnership among the city’s Police Department, Fire Department, Recreation Department, Disability Services Committee and Opportunities for Inclusion, along with numerous community volunteers.

Waltham Police Capt. Jeff Rodley played a key role in organizing and supporting the event, which also featured appearances by local mascots, Waltham High School cheerleaders and public safety personnel who joined volunteers in encouraging athletes throughout the day.

Now in its third year, the event continues to grow as a celebration of inclusion, community and participation for all.
