Senior Center this week: Vote, get your flu/COVID shot, see “The Intern”

Waltham’s Council on Aging operates out of the William F. Stanley Senior Center at 488 Main St. The spacious, well-equipped center offers guidance on senior issues as well as rich programs for exercise, music, classes and socializing. Election Day, Tuesday, Sept. 1. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Flu / COVID shot drop-in clinic,  Thursdays at 1 p.m. on Sept. 3, Sept. 24 and Oct. 8. Waiver forms are available at the front desk to complete and bring with you. 

Movie, “The Intern,” Friday, Sept. 4, 10 a.m. (subtitled), 1 p.m. (no subtitles). Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway star in this heartwarming comedy about Ben, a 70-year-old widower who becomes a senior intern at a fast-growing online fashion company. Along the way, he forms an unexpected friendship with the company’s young CEO. The Intern is a charming story about friendship, second chances and discovering that age is never a barrier to trying something new. PG-13/ 2 hours 1 minute. $0.50 donation. Please register.

Planning ahead

Schedule appointments for 2027 Medicare open enrollment, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8. The annual Medicare open enrollment period runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. During this time, Medicare beneficiaries can select different coverages for the following year.

The Singing Trooper. Friday, September 11 @ 1:00 PM. Daniel Clark will present his heartfelt concert in honor of 9/11 as we honor the day together through song. Known for his powerful voice and inspiring performances, Clark brings music that reflects remembrance, unity and pride.  Please Register. The cost is $5.00 per person due at sign up.

Sages and Seekers Creating Connections. Tuesdays, 3 to 4:30 p.m., Sept. 15 to Oct. 27. Sages and Seekers is a seven-week program offering a unique opportunity for seniors to connect and share meaningful conversations with students from Waltham High School. For adults 60 and older who are available for the seven-week program. If you are interested, please leave your contact information at the Council on Aging at 781-314-3499. A member of the planning committee will contact you.

Walking groups. The outdoor walking group at Veterans Field is independent for the month of September. Indoor walking at Bentley and Brandeis is scheduled to start in late September or early October. Look for the start dates in upcoming newsletters.

Line Dancing. Will be held on Wednesday evenings during the month of September and will return to Tuesday evenings starting Oct. 6.

Did you know?

The COA provides information on legal services, home care, assistance with nursing homes and assisted living facilities, financial assistance, housing options, mental health and substance abuse.

• Volunteers are needed to deliver Meals on Wheels. Home delivered meals available Monday to Friday. Subsidized by Springwell or private pay.
• Senior parking permits are available for $5 per year. Show your drivers’ license at the COA registration desk.
• Taxi vouchers are available for purchase, six books per month.
• Help with transportation. Medical appointment transportation is available in Waltham only. Grocery shopping routes are on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, call for availability. Limited transportation to the Senior Center is available upon request with advanced notice.

Multi-language programs

Tuesdays at 10 a.m. English as a second language classes given by an experienced ESL teacher. Improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills while learning practical English for everyday life. Free but please register.

Wednesdays at 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Hora del Café. Spanish-speaking coffee hour. 

Fridays 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Ugandan Golden Seniors lunch program.
