The Waltham Public Library has on display works created by senior citizens at the 2nd annual Council on Aging art show. Curated by COA Art Director Dawn Scaltreto, the 36 pieces are the work of Waltham seniors who participate in a weekly art class at the Senior Center. The show will be up through the end of June.

Scaltreto said the artists are thrilled to see their art on display after months of hard work. Students chose their own medium and provided the materials for their projects. The teacher offered instruction on techniques and supportive critiques, but the ideas were all theirs.

Gussy Forte, one of the contributing artists, said she has been painting since childhood. She enjoys nature subjects, such as the swans and hummingbirds in the work she has on display at the show. Another artist, George Watchko, began making art about 20 years ago. Forte and Watchko both said they enjoy making art to relax and find pleasure in life.

Scaltreto has been teaching painting at the Senior Center for the past 25 years. “The students now have more free time after lives devoted to family and work,” she said. She finds it rewarding to see them bring their artwork to the next level.

“Strong friendships have developed among class members,” she said. Some continue to meet during the summer months when the class is not in session. Families of the seniors have told Scaltreto how meaningful these classes have been for their relatives during their later years.

The art show will be on display on the ground floor of the Waltham Public Library from now until June 30.
