Despite gray skies and some drizzle, Waltham residents gathered Saturday to celebrate the launch of the Waltham Public Library’s new bookmobile.

A tent provided cover as curious visitors stepped inside for a first-hand look at what WPL staff describe as a mini library on wheels. Children’s Librarian Jennifer Costa welcomed visitors from the driver’s seat, while Reference Department Head Amber Harvey and Teen Department Head Lauren Flocco offered tours and answered questions.

The bookmobile is designed to bring library services directly to residents, allowing visitors to check out and return books, sign up for library cards and speak with librarians for reading recommendations.

The goal, library staff said, is to make services more accessible by meeting people where they are, whether at neighborhood stops or community events. Materials borrowed from the bookmobile can be returned there, at the WPL or at any Minuteman Library location.

“The bookmobile doesn’t run on a specific schedule, but will pop up at Waltham events across the city. Its collection will shift depending on the event, such as children’s books for family-focused programs,” Harvey said.

Library staff are inviting residents to drop by the WPL to suggest future stops for the bookmobile and help name the new vehicle.
